These structure-location environments enable trials to occur in an ethical, reliable setting and under rigorous expectations such as CONSORT guidelines, thereby conserving the reliability of the research findings.

The clinical landscape continues evolving and so too are the evolutions of clinical research sites; sites have begun to adapt to new expectations of clinical trials and employs new technologies—from electronic data capture to telemedicine—to better the engagement of participants and streamline operations.

Site networks have also begun to emerge, providing a way for sponsors, investigators, and regulators work together to accelerate participant recruitment, sought high dataset quality, and continue developing sites.

Diversity is also an emergent and growing focus area. Research sites are on the quest to diversify their populations in their studies so that they can ethically represent trials, but to ensure that findings are generalizable to diverse patient populations outside of newspapers.

In closing, while clinical research sites are not venues for trials alone, they do serve as crucial engines and key facilitators of medical innovation. Within a rigorous environment, through innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration, research sites develop a pipeline of research and quickly relay that into practice and patient outcomes.
